Frequently Asked Questions

What is the process to get married in Greece?

+

The quickest and easiest approach for a wedding abroad is to have the legal ceremony in your country of residence and fly to Greece for the celebrations and host a “symbolic-style” ceremony.

However, if you would like to process the legal paperwork in Greece, you will need to be slightly more organised (or get support from a local planner!). For European citizens, it is often recommended to contact the local Greek town hall 6-12 months before your ideal wedding date to find out about local civil partnership laws, including what documents you and your partner will need.

Typically, you must bring your translated documents (stamped with an Apostille) to the local Town Hall. The marriage license will be issued eight days later, and will remain valid for six months. Once you have an idea of your wedding date and venue, you must submit a joint application to the mayor to confirm the location and date. The local town hall will arrange for the local mayor or representative to conduct a 20 minute ceremony for you in Greek.

You are required to have 2 witnesses (with Greek passports) and 1 interpreter during the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, you must file a registration form with the Office of Vital Statistics in the Greek municipality within 40 days. The marriage certificate (lixiarchiki praxi gamou) is issued within three days of the registration and can be collected or be mailed to you.

What is the quickest & easiest way to get married in Greece?

+

The quickest and easiest approach for a wedding abroad is to have the legal ceremony in your country of residence and fly to Greece for the celebrations for a “symbolic-style” ceremony. This means that you do not need to worry about sharing, translating or completing additional documents for a civil or religious ceremony as you are already legally married. When you come to Greece, you can celebrate your commitment to one another and personalise the ceremony in a way that reflects your values and beliefs (personal vows, favorite songs, poetry, gift exchanges, religious elements etc).

Who can get married in Greece?

+

There are no legal residency requirements for a wedding and both civil and religious marriage ceremonies are legally recognized. Greece is known to be a liberal European country, but also a religious one. Unfortunately, same-sex civil unions are not legally recognized in Greece (fly over for a symbolic ceremony instead!). Couples must be 18 years old to legally marry, and under-18s must have written parental consent.

How soon before the wedding should I arrive in Greece?

+

CEE European countries: At least 3 working days before the wedding

NON-EU countries: Allow for at least 5 working days before the wedding

* This information is indicative only. the arrival time may vary based on your citizenship and residency status. Please check with your national embassy before making any travel arrangements.

What kind of wedding can I have in Greece?

+

If you would like to have the legal ceremony in Greece, there are typically three types of wedding ceremonies you can have:

1. Civil Ceremony: Performed by the local mayor or town officer in a Town Hall, Mayor’s Office or Villa with an official wedding permit. The ceremony is typically 20 minutes, conducted in Greek and recognised worldwide.

2. Religious Ceremony. Performed by the local priest in a church setting and does not require a civil ceremony beforehand. Greek Orthodox, Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish ceremonies are all possible in Greece.

3. Symbolic Ceremony: A humanist wedding does not require any legal documents and is not legally binding. Instead, you have the freedom to personalise the ceremony to reflect your values and beliefs. Alternatively, you can have the legal ceremony in your country of residence and fly to Greece for the celebrations and host a “symbolic-style” ceremony. This is the quickest and easiest approach for a wedding abroad.

The quickest and easiest approach for a wedding abroad is to have the legal ceremony in your country of residence and fly to Greece for the celebrations and host a “symbolic-style” ceremony.

However, if you would like to process the legal paperwork in Greece, Europeans & UK citizens require the following for a civil ceremony.

1. Certificate of Non Impediment: A certificate you receive from your local counsel, stating you are free to marry. This is also known as a CNI. Each person in the couple requires one and is valid for three months.

2. A valid passport

3. Original birth certificate with an Apostille stamp certifying the copy

4. Proof any previous marriages have ended (Divorce Decree or Death Certificate)

*all the above must be translated into greek by a translator authorised by the Greek Embassy.

5. Newspaper Announcement: Couples must announce their will to get married with the local newspaper or at the local community office or town hall 8 days before you submit your wedding license.
