Exchange vows on the beautifully manicured lakeside lawns overlooking the lake and mountains. Anyone can get married in Italy! There are no legal residency requirements for a wedding. Couples must be 18 years old to legally marry, and under-18s must have written parental consent. Muslim individuals aged 16 can marry with the permission of sharia authorities.

What documentation is needed to get married in Italy?

The quickest and easiest approach for a wedding abroad is to have the legal ceremony in your country of residence and fly to Italy for the celebrations and host a “symbolic-style” ceremony.

However, if you would like to process the legal paperwork in Italy, each British national resident in the UK requires the following for a civil ceremony.

1. Certificate of Non Impediment: A certificate you receive from your local counsel, stating you are free to marry. This is also known as a CNI, Atto Notorio or a single status certificate. Each person in the couple requires one and typically costs around £35 (valid for six months).

2. Statutory Declaration: A document you receive from your local counsel, stating your will to get married. This is also known as nulla osta, statutory declaration or sworn declaration. Each person in the couple requires one and must be signed in front of a solicitor or public notary.

The quickest and easiest approach for a wedding abroad is to have the legal ceremony in your country of residence and fly to Italy for the celebrations for a “symbolic-style” ceremony. This means that you do not need to worry about sharing, translating or completing additional documents for a civil or religious ceremony as you are already legally married. When you come to Italy, you can celebrate your commitment to one another and personalise the ceremony in a way that reflects your values and beliefs (personal vows, favorite songs, poetry, gift exchanges, religious elements etc).

What kind of wedding can I have in Italy?

If you would like to have the legal ceremony in Italy, there are typically three types of wedding ceremonies you can have:

1. Civil Ceremony: Performed by the local Italian mayor or town officer in a Town Hall or Villa with an official wedding permit. The ceremony is typically 20 minutes, conducted in Italian and recognised worldwide.

2. Religious Ceremony. Performed by the local priest in a church setting and does not require a civil ceremony beforehand. Either you or your partner (or both) must be a Catholic and neither of you can be divorced.

3. Symbolic Ceremony: A humanist wedding does not require any legal documents and is not legally binding. Instead, you have the freedom to personalise the ceremony to reflect your values and beliefs. Alternatively, you can have the legal ceremony in your country of residence and fly to Italy for the celebrations and host a “symbolic-style” ceremony. This is the quickest and easiest approach for a wedding abroad.

What is the process to get married in Italy?

However, if you would like to process the legal paperwork in Italy, you will need to be slightly more organised (or get support from a local planner!). For Europeans and UK citizens, it is often recommended to contact the local Italian town hall 6-12 months before your ideal wedding date to find out about local civil partnership laws, including what documents you and your partner will need .

Typically, you must bring the “Certificate of Non Impediment” and “Statutory Declaration” translated in Italian and legalised with a Hague Apostille in the UK. Once you have decided your wedding date and venue, email these documents to the venue owner, wedding planner or go directly to the local town hall in Italy to register your civil partnership. The local town hall with arrange for the local mayor or representative to conduct a 20 minute ceremony for you in Italian. This is often held in the Town Hall or in a villa with a wedding permit.

You are required to have 2 witnesses and 1 interpreter during the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, you will sign the Ceremony Act which is translated into multiple languages and recognised as a legal wedding certificate all over the world. Once you are back in your country of residence, you may bring this to your local council to have it registered as well.
